The Anchorage School District is now accepting responses to its 2015 Climate & Connectedness Survey. The results of the survey help us gauge how we're doing, both at the school and district level. Are we welcoming and inviting? Do we have high expectations? Do our students feel safe at school? Click here for the survey.

Principal's Message

Dave Legg

We hope that things are going well as we move into the second semester. There are a number of important dates throughout this letter regarding surveys, school visits, a new Web Page for Chugiak, college prep. and more. This month, I would like to specifically highlight February as" Visit Our Schools" month. Each Tuesday this month we would like to extend an invitation to parents and community members to visit Chugiak High. Tours begin at 9:30 a.m. during the month of February. On February 24th, we will have two tours. One at 9:30 a.m and a second at 6:00 p.m. During your visit you will be given a guided tour of the school and many of our programs will be highlighted. In addition, you will be provided with information regarding unique programs and opportunities available to students. If you are a current parent of a student, a parent of a future student, if you home school or if you just want to see for yourself what public education has to offer, we encourage you to attend one of our tours. If you are unable to make a scheduled tour, please contact the school for an alternate time.

Staff and Student Services News

George Campnell

One of the benefits of being a staff member of Chugiak High School is the realization that the vast majority of our Chugiak High School students come to school prepared to study and focus on future success. In order to foster this attitude the CHS family is constantly working to build a strong social and emotional environment where students can thrive. However, there are times when adolescents do feel down. The following is the opening to an article written by school Psychologist Mary DuHoux, titled: Depression in Adolescents.

"Depression is a common and universal part of the human experience. It can occur at any age and have multiple causes and symptoms. The onset of depression can be gradual or sudden, brief or long-term. Recognizing depression can be very difficult in teens because it co-exists with other disorders such as anxiety, drug/alcohol abuse or Attention Deficit Disorder and because of the normal mood swings common in adolescence."

If you feel your student may be struggling with depression, please see the link for the whole article with helpful suggestions.

On another note, some of our CHS students have a clouded perception that the passage of Proposition 2 will somehow lesson the severity of consequences for the use of marijuana. There is nothing further from the truth. ASD sanctions concerning drug use will not change. Another important fact some students fail to grasp is the possession of marijuana on school property is a felony offence based on federal laws concerning the Safe & Drug Free School Zones. This also will not change.
